GCMA Wales – Wales v Ireland 2026
Venue – Cardigan Golf Club
Date – 27-29 June 2026
Cardigan GC was a welcoming and ideally placed venue to play Ireland, close to the ferry for the visitors, adjacent accommodation and a testing course for all. Those who played the practice day, dry but in a howling gale, came in battered and numerous golf balls down on the deal.
Fortunately the match days were far kinder, hot to cool, calm to breezy (often changing by the hole through each round).
After a hard earned 2-2 result on day one, Ireland came out on top to win 5-3
At the formal dinner, Richard Brookman (Wales Captain) and Paddy Dean (Ireland President) speeches thanked the efforts of both teams while emphasising the value and joy of playing this match.
Being his first international match, Matt Jones delivered a wonderful rendition of Tequila (Messers Miller, Hall and Morgan had persuaded him this was ‘tradition’ but now it just may be)
The trophy, a One Iron (donated by Paddy Dean) was presented back to him.
A per a tradition started in Malone, the One Iron was taken outside, to ‘fire’ (‘dribble’) balls at a distant pin on the adjacent pitch & putt (safely if you have any concerns), to say the results were mixed is no surprise but it was a wonderful and amusing session.
